On our trip to Alaska in July 2014, my son (11yo) and I chartered a helicopter from Denali (ERA Helicopters) to go see the bus. While I am sure not quite the same experience as hiking to the bus, it was safe and I could take my 11 year old son. It was an amazing experience circling the bus from the air and setting down on the river rocks just down the hill from the bus. Walking up the hill and rounding the corner and getting the first sight of the bus from the ground is indescribable. The bus is not in great shape and was in disarray inside but similar to what I had pictured in my mind. Seeing the log books and signatures from people around the world who were inspired by Chris, each in their own ways, was humbling. The trip back we followed the Stampede Trail all the way back to Stampede Rd and Healy. We could see the movie prop bus from the air (and visited it later by car) at the 49th State Brewery in Healy. A great trip and even though I didn't know Christopher, his story from the book and movie - (true, embellished or false - not here to judge) inspired my son and I to have an extra adventure and see something we would not normally see. So no matter what his story is or was, his just living touched someone he didn't know and inspired us in our own way.

Sounds like you had a great trip.

Sad to see the bus looking worse year on year, not through natural ageing but mindless vandalism.

An unforgettable experience nonetheless.

All the best,

Nick

Hello!
We are planning a round trip through Canada and Alaska in 2020. In the Denali we have 2 nights and a highlight of the trip would be a trip to the bus 142! You wrote that you are there with the helicopter. Can you give me any contact address where I can book such a river?
Greetings, Dieter from Germany
