So, you want to go to the bus, here's a guide

Postby sillygringo » Thu Mar 25, 2010 9:11 pm

I just finished a write up on my visit to the magic bus complete with directions, recommendations and gps points that can be found here:

http://www.freewheelings.com/visiting-into-the-wild-magic-bus/

If anyone has any information to add I'd love to hear it. Use the comments section if you like. Also, if anyone has studied the history of the bus and wanted to do a guest section on its story (with a link back to you) I'd love to hear about it.

Cheers.

Hi sillygringo,

Thank you so much to let us appreciate your amazing trip to the site ! was really feeling the sensation while reading the report and watching the pictures. What an amazing place !

And now, we know for sure the Magic Bus has not been moved somewhere else, and the memory of Chris will continue to surround this place !

Really hope to have the opportunity to make such a trip soon.

See you,

Hi!
I love your blog about your trip to out to the bus... It's such an amazing (tragic) story, and the personal adventure it requires in order to make a pilgramage to his memory is even more amazing. I've been wanting to go for years, and fortunately i am finally able to afford to fly to alaska. I am going to Denali late next month for a 3 week long (on and off) back packing trip with my boyfriend. We plan to head out to the bus along our way. I was wondering if you still have the gps coordinates for all of your waypoints along the trail? I saw your progress on the map you posted, and it seems pretty straightforward. Any advice?
We are renting a pack-raft just in case the tek is too high to ford on foot. How long did it take you to get there? Would you say we're crazy to do it in two days (one day in, camp, one day out)?
How did you like the SPOT gps?

Again, ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks!

I recently did a video project on hiking to the bus as part of a digital story telling class:

Thanks for your posts.
That is great info and advice for those wishing to visit the bus. I get many requests for this type of information, so again, thanks.

After reading around online and seeing just how many people are interested in finding out more about hiking to the bus, I put this site together as a resource for those people:

http://www.pathfinderalaska.com/stampedetrail/

Hopefully having it up will encourage people to be prepared, and not take the trek lightly, as well as respect the place once they are there.
I posted a link there to sillygringo's page as well. Good stuff.

I just found "erikhalfacre"s site. Very nice work. I think the trail conditions section is very important to the net. Has anybody used our advice to make it to the bus. Anybody used it to get on CNN?

We've been keeping an updated guide under the 'Discussions on Alaska' tab then 'Helpful Advice And What You'll Need To Get To The Magic Bus' topic. Pretty useful stuff. I wrote a rather lenghty post for the solo hikers out there, which I would not advise doing unless you already have extensive experiance doing so
