anyone go to SALVATION MOUNTAIN??!

Postby kingdomdayz777 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 6:05 am

i just was in palm springs this past week, sitting on the computer after a day of outdoor activities, and all of a sudden the thought of Salvation Mountain hit me.

i looked it up, and it was only an hour-ish away! that next day i got up early and drove there. it is just like it is in the movie. the big "RV Camp" city aka the Slabs, and the Mountain itself (made out of over 60,000 gallons of adobe clay!) was absolutely incredible. a true slice of Heaven on Earth. Leonard Knight wasn't there, he has been sick lately and is living somewhere in Niland, California (the same town where the Mountain is). not one person was there when i arrived, however like 7 people showed up later. they were working on the railroads nearby and came by on their ATV's and cars.

it is like 50 feet high, and has many little clay huts behind it. absolutely stunning. i could spend hours there. ..

has ANYONE been to Salvation Mountain? any stories you care to share?

if not, go! it is on Beal Road in Niland, California. (you can't miss it) :)

I haven't been, yet, but will soon. I live about 2 hours away, more towards the beach, out in between Anaheim, and LA itself.

I shall take photos, and memories.

I've been there a couple of times in the past year. Unfortunately, Leonard no longer lives at the mountain or in Niland. I was fortunate enough to catch him right before he left. I highly recommend checking it out before its too late.

You can check out a few pictures on my blog:

Too bad this info is so old. Leonard is dead. His caretaker died a month before he did. The mtn is incredible. Go and see it. I fled the slabs in dec. after living there for seven years WITHOUT ONE NIGHT AWAY. I was in the movie as a walkon like so many slabbers. Supposedly there is a foundation taking care of the mtn. Who knows? My last name was mccandless and people I knew thought it was me who died in Alaska! Ha! Still on the road.

I doubt he did, otherwise why hasn't this been mentioned anywhere else on the web?

Unfortunately, there's bad news: Leonard passed away at age 82.

May he rest in peace.
