No, it was clear in both the book and movie and from his sister that Chris was scared of relationships. There was even some argument that he could be gay, but I definitely disagree with that. Chris just wanted to explore himself, get away from his hypocritical parents and away from society and relationships. As you can see from either book/movie if he wanted a relationship with ANYONE he would have tried to call his parents, stay with the "rubber tramp" couple, or with anyone he met along his adventure or even hook up with that girl from Slab City. So no he did not have a girlfriend.

Chris McCandless did not have a girlfriend because he didn't want to have a close relationship with anyone he met on his journey to Alaska. However, he met a girl (who fell for him) in the Slab City, which Chris avoid because she was only age seventeen or sixteen, Chris just wanted to live in the wild with no relationships at all, so he didn't have a girlfriend.

Chris being gay is a very real possibility.

Kitz, like so many others you confuse the movie and perhaps the books for that of the reality, which none of us truly know.

Chris had clear bonds and relationships with people, perhaps not sexual but to say that he wanted no relationship is misguided to say the least. Many months of his quest are unaccounted for, who is to say that during those periods he hadn’t met someone and just chose not to document it.

Chris kept long distance contact with those who he formed a bond with on his adventure, I do feel only a matter of time before he renewed contact with Carine and his Parents too if he had only managed to return to civilization when he first tried.

He spent a considerable amount of time in Las Vegas. As with so much about Chris, this is conjecture, but think about what he used to bring attention to his note on the bus: a dancer's leg warmer. Think about the leather belt he made and its inclusion of Las Vegas and the initials "TCD." Yes, it's highly speculative, but did he befriend a dancer while in Las Vegas? And even if he didn't AND if he was gay, does it matter? Does it change his reasons for living the way he did his last two years? Not at all.

Being gay makes no difference. None at all. And I am a tad anti-gay.

I don't think Chris was gay. His parents said one time he got really drunk and tried to bring a girl home, but Walt caught him. I think he may have had Aspergers (see my posts on this), which is different. We don't know much about his stay in Vegas. It's likely that he lived in the storm drains underneath the Strip, I once saw a video about people who live down there and who come out at night and scoop up unclaimed change from slot machine trays. He may have worked at a casino, some people think that "TCD" means "trusted cash dispenser". This likely means he was a "cashier" at a casino, the cashier being the person who turns nickles and quarters into paper money for customers. In Reno they've gone to a ticket system where the machines spit out tickets, and the ticket is taken to the cashier. Being a cashier means that a lot of important people put a lot of trust in you. It's possible that he met a woman (a showgirl, maybe?) and fell for her despite his better judgment. He was physically attractive, and easy to like. Remember Wayne saying that he thought that Chris had the type of good looks that "women made a fuss over". It's likely he didn't pursue Tracy because of her age, she was too young and he didn't want to get accused of something and wind up in jail.
