I think he didn't write to Carine because he didn't want his folks to pry his location out of her, then go pick him up. He was apparently quite serious about cutting himself off from his family, although his reason for doing so was stupid and his folks deserved better. I think he would have eventually settled down, either in South Dakota or Bullhead City. He seemed quite happy with being a farmworker, despite his education. I don't know what he would have done a decade later when the Mexicans started taking over farm jobs.
