Seems like this kid had a death wish?

I recently saw some info on this movie.... Prior to watching it I decided to read the book first to get an overall perspective on his story. After reading the book and watching this movie I was shocked at some of the choices this kid made. I've lived in Alaska and know how brutal the country can be, that being said a kid as bright as Chris with his education made some very poor decisions.
Just seems like he was so in love with the idea of living off the land he failed to prepare for what was to come..... Again seems like he had a bit of a death wish .....
Regardless of what I think it's a truly sad story about a very sad young man that died way to early.
