Into the wild - dissertation

Postby Lene010 » Sun May 08, 2011 3:12 pm

Hello! :)
This is my first day on that board and I hope it is okay that I opened a new topic for the following:

At school we have to write an exam (in german it's called "Komplexe Leistung").
It is something we have to write in one year and you can call it a small dissertation.
We can choose the topic by ourselves.

The story of Chris McCandless and the book "Into the wild" really captured me a long time ago and I was fascinated by this man and every other thing that was similar or related to it.

So I chose that Topic. But I don't want to write only about Into the wild, but also about other stories and compare them. I thought about "A vagabond for beauty" and to reading some Tolstoi.

All in all I want to write about the dreams and the fascination of young men, who go out into the wild to find the true meaning...

I wanted to ask you, what do you think which book would be the best for me to read next and to include in my work?

I would appreciate any help. :)

Hi Lene010,

You have picked a great subject for your dissertation!

Are you familiar with Henry David Thoreau?, I would really advise the book Walden to you.
You could also look up the book 'Education of a Wandering Man' from Louis L'Amour. But I would definitely start with Thoreau, one of Christopher's 'mentors'!.

Good Luck!

No problem man!

You might want to have access to the notes on Walden aswell; http://thoreau.eserver.org/. Most of his essays and books are readable on the above webpage, including notes and other resourceful information about Henry David Thoreau and his philosophy.

x2 on "Into Thin Air". It was a book that I could not put down. Incredible writing style that makes one think they are the mountain with them. Into the wild was good as well. I will have to look at the other books.
