Re: maps or no?

The only map he had was a basic Alaska road map, but not the topographical map that would have included the location of the cable crossing. The road map he had did show the Stampede Trail. According to Jim Gallien on the Back to the Wild special on Animal Planet, Chris asked him if he knew where the...

Animal Planet's Back to the Wild special

Some have inquired about this. It's still in production, according to M2pictures. Here's the link (scroll down to see it) ... http://m2-pictures.com/

Re: asperger's

As our understanding improves of how the brain works, the so-called labels have more meaning. Technology and science have helped mankind realize that what was once deemed demon possession is something quite different and often quite treatable without exorcisms. To dismiss science's role in understan...

Re: asperger's

An article by Chip Brown offers some interesting observations from people who knew Chris, people Krakauer either didn't interview or chose not to include in his book. Here are a couple of excerpts... “A couple of times, he said he didn’t think he’d make it to thirty,” Joshua Marshall, a college frie...

Re: Chris's "fear of water"...

The point about bane berries is interesting, but I was of the understanding that death by bane berry poisoning was unheard of because they have an intensely off-putting flavor. Mixed into large quantities of another edible berry though, perhaps they could be accidentally ingested. The other questio...

Re: Chris's "fear of water"...

Thanks for the link to the article with photos that Chris took. I hadn't seen several of those. The one of the Tek River is very interesting for several reasons. The river doesn't look that high to me. It looks about average for summer. When the level is real high it goes up over a lot of that big ...

Re: Chris's "fear of water"...

Krakauer did make a pretty big deal about Chris not having a good map and how a good topo map would have indicated the presence of a gauging station about a mile down the Tek River from the trail crossing. Couple thoughts about that.... Chris had been on enough back country trips to know that detai...

Re: Chris's "fear of water"...

This gallery includes a photo Chris took of the Tek when he attempted to leave in early July 1992. I see high water, but I also see gravel bars, including the big one just upstream from the main crossing. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/i-am-reborn-this-is-my-dawn-the-...

Re: Did Alex Supertramp kill Chris?

I wonder why Chris didn't plan to write more during his trip out the Stampede. This was going to be his greatest adventure. He had written journals before about his trips. Why didn't he take a notebook to write in? He did take (or find) a bunch of books at the bus. He wrote short entries on a blank...

Re: Did Alex Supertramp kill Chris?

I do believe Chris was trying to tell a story, but Husky may not be all that far off in citing this article. Several of Krakauer's sources allude to things that suggest Chris was struggling with some kind of mental illness (Charlie in Bullhead City mentions Chris "didn't like to be around too m...
