Re: Jon Krakauers article on the New Yorker
YES! This article really clicked with me, too, and I DO believe there is a lot of truth here to explain what actually happened. We REALLY need to 'listen' to Chris' words in his journal: 'Fault pot seed", "Much trouble just to stand up", and other entries. He did make an egregious er...

Re: Did Chris have a girlfriend?
Kitz, like so many others you confuse the movie and perhaps the books for that of the reality, which none of us truly know. Chris had clear bonds and relationships with people, perhaps not sexual but to say that he wanted no relationship is misguided to say the least. Many months of his quest are u...

What role, if any, did ...
Chris's consumption of wild mushrooms have in his death? From his terse journal, we know that toward the end of July, he wrote, "many mushrooms. Dream." At least one of his photographs shows several mushrooms next to a plastic zip-lock bag of seeds and a dead squirrel. The mention of "...

Chris had a state of Alaska road map
and that map included the Stampede Trail, according to the book. According to the Alaska state troopers report, this map was among Chris's possessions turned over to his relatives.
So, Chris knew where he was. His conversation with Jim Gallien revealed as much.

Re: Great new article by Ron Hamilton on Chris' death
This is definitely a well-written article based upon some very interesting research findings that, if supported by peer review, could explain Chris's death. It's true that Chris wrote on Aug. 5 he was in "weakest condition of life, death looms as serious threat. Too weak to walk out, have liter...

Re: why burning his money?
People need to remember Chris's sources of money were varied. Yes, he had $300 at the end, but nearly two years and several jobs separate that from the money he had at the beginning, which was a combination of cash left over from his college fund and any other cash he might have had in the bank. For...

Re: maps or no?
According to Jim Gallien on the Back to the Wild special on Animal Planet, Chris asked him if he knew where the Stampede Trail is, that Chris had heard or read about it sometime earlier. This is also what Krakauer wrote in his book: A little later Alex pulled out his crude map and pointed to a dash...

Re: Animal Planet Special
I watched it. For the most part, nothing new was disclosed, although Jan Burress had a couple interesting comments. The first was she thought "Alex" was one of the laziest hitchhikers she had ever seen (sitting down with a half-hearted thumb out while he read and ate berries). The second w...
