Re: Companionship for hike august/sept 2013

September 2 could be a good time to go. There will be lots of hunters who can give you ride in their big trucks. And if you have problems with bears or anything else there will be Park Service Rangers out there on "hunting patrols" to help you.

Re: One day walk to bus and drive back-excellent!

NO, that's not my video and I'm not in it. I've lived around Healy for 40 years and don't recognise any of the people in the trucks. But I don't know a lot of the young guys around here now so they could be from the area. I came across the video on the Denali Park Facebook page under the story about...

Re: Rangers, Trooper and SAR at Bus

The blue van was abandoned there between the Savage and Tek in the 80's. It was south of the trail in that low stretch of trail just before the tek. It was an old hunting camp with a lot of trash but was far enough off the trail (about 100 feet) that you could walk by without seeing it... The Ranger...

One day walk to bus and drive back-excellent!

Here's what a lot of us were seeing last year out on the trail... :(

Hikers enjoying a quiet hike to the wilderness only to find big tire trucks now visit the area too. Hey, at least you can hitch a ride back to 8 Mile Lake if you get blisters.

Rangers, Trooper and SAR at Bus

All of you planning a trip to the bus should be happy to hear that national Park rangers, Alaska State troopers and Healy search and rescue personnel now make regular safety patrols by snow machine and all terrain vehicles out to the bus. They are there to help you.... Oh yeah, and also to watch for...

Re: why burning his money?

He didn't burn all his money. He had a wallet with identifications and money hidden in a hidden zippered pocket in his pack. The cops didn't find it when they searched his pack when they retrieved his body. The cops left the pack in the bus. A guy found the pack 4 months later and then after 8 or 9 ...

Re: 20 years ago

During this early period of Chris's sojourn he was reportedly exploring the hills north and west of the bus with the goal of continuing on toward the coast some hundreds of miles to the west. He wrote during this period that he was snowed in and experiencing a famine. (He must have meant a hunting f...

Re: Another story about a young guy in the wilds of Alaska

This same fellow, Andrew Costales, was later arrested for burning down a cabin that he had been using out east of Healy. Local trappers knew he was living in the cabin and reported it was burned down. Costales claims it was an accident. He is also charged with hunting violations which he posted hims...

Re: Chris's "fear of water"...

The dates of the pics must be construed from correlations with his journal. The date of the one of the berries may be right, or at least close. Judging by the sparse leaves on the bushes and the appearance of the snow on the background hills I would guess that the picture is more likely to be late M...

Re: Our Parents are SO Far Gone

I can relate to what your saying. I thought my folks were pretty lame, too. But, they gave up a lot to raise me and my brother. It was their dream, I guess, to have a family and make a secure life for us. In a way, they took a risk in creating me and they must have hoped I wouldn't be too much of a ...
