Re: Questions Unanswered...

I'd like to hear from Carine if all of Chris's photos have been published.
Also her opinion of why Chris didn't do more to effect a rescue?
And, why didn't Carine use Chris's backpack when she hiked to the bus last summer?

Re: I AM INJURED, NEAR DEATH, AND TOO WEAK TO HIKE OUT OF HE

Cheerwine-- You ask- Why didn't he light a fire to start a rescue? He also could have written a big SOS on the white roof of the bus?? Yes, he could have built a big signal fire with all the driftwood on the river upstream from the bus. He wouldn't have had to light the whole area on fire to get att...

Re: Crossing Teklanika river in video

Yeah, they look familiar to me too. Isn't that interesting how the one "expert" guy explains to the other one how the buses were "flown" in there and then two of them were "flown" out while one was left behind? I didn't know buses could fly back then....

Crossing Teklanika river in video

there is a real good video clip of two guys crossing the Teklanika River in deep water- good thing to watch if you are planning to try this trip. This clip is at medium river level for summer. Funny when they get to the other side they have a truck and a helicopter waiting for them... :D http://www....

Re: Source for maps

Yes. One of the icons on top looks like a clock- click it and a info bar appears with date of current photos and allows access to older satellite photos too. Newest on Stampede is from July 2011. It's good to compare older photos and see how the trail has changed with use.

Re: Where was the plaque in the movie

Into the Wild wasn't filmed in the actual bus. The scenes with a bus in them were filmed near Cantwell- about 50 miles south of Stampede in a different bus...

Re: Something you may not have seen yet...

Thanks for posting those links. Both interesting. I'd been wanting to see that Animal Planet documentary. Lot of pictures I hadn't seen before. Much of it is pretty silly (snow on the ground all summer, ice covered river on April 29?) but it had some interesting assertions. I'm left wondering why, i...

Re: Jon Krakauers article in the New Yorker

I agree that the new poisoning theory doesn't make sense. one correction, though, if its okay. Carine saw the pack in Ron Lamothe's documentary and found a number for Forsberg and called him. She gave Forsberg her address and he mailed her the pack, wallet, id's and money. Krakauer had nothing to do...

Source for maps

Good idea to have a map before going out to the bus. You need to buy topo maps from the USGS. www.usgs.gov Get the smallest scale for the most details. You can also usually get the quadrangle size maps at Denali Park visitor center. But sometimes they run out. Best to get "section" maps fo...

German hikers rescued on Stampede road

Three more people had to be rescued by helicopter when they couldn't cross the Teklanika. Kinda silly to walk out there right at break up when every river in interior Alaska is flooding. Maybe they can't read English. Or maybe a lot of hikers are just being more careless since they know the Rangers ...
