I wonder if this is the Suburban referred to:
This is at the Stampede Airstrip as I understood it from Ms. Hines.
Either way, I'd love to have a rig like that of that era. I just wouldn't like fueling it.

Re: Stampede- Road or Trail?
Interesting stuff. I actually looked for that cabin for a while on our trip, but did not find it (for now obvious reasons.)

Re: IS THERE MORE TO THE CHRISTOPHER MCCANDLESS STORY???
8 miles of Stampede Road are a 'road.' It's actually state maintained to a point and there are many side roads coming off of it with homes and such. Past 8 mile lake though, the road degrades into a trail, by any logical definition. I'm not making this point so much to dispute your friends knowledge...

Re: IS THERE MORE TO THE CHRISTOPHER MCCANDLESS STORY???
I think your friend is pretty misinformed. The Stampede Road was never a road more-so than a 'road in construction.' The funding never came through for the bridges, so at it's most developed it was still just a wide Caterpillar trail, not really a road. It's important to remember that Bus 142 was le...

Re: Chris hid from help?
Ron Lamothe had posted elsewhere on the forum that someone claimed they drove their Toyota Tercel out the bus during the time when Chris was there. The details seemed a bit sketchy to me, and I'm having a really hard time believing that a Tercel crossed the Teklanika without flooding out, but I've s...

Alaska Animation
Hey everybody, this is an animation that my wife Jenna and I put together in anticipation of our move back home to Alaska here in a couple months. I thought some of you might get a kick out of seeing it. Can't wait to be back. http://vimeo.com/28474821 "The freedom and simple beauty is too good...

Re: Fall on Stampede
Seeing fall colors makes me itch that much more to get back home. Less than two months til I'm back in AK for good. These have been the longest two years of my life.

Re: Replica buses.
Sean Penn made the decision not to shoot at the bus because he didn't want to disrupt the area that way, and because logistically it would have been a nightmare to shoot on location, according to what I've read.

Re: Using a raft to cross the Teklanika River?
I believe so. Ropes go up all the time though. People that use them as a hand rail aren't really putting themselves at significant risk, (unless you somehow get snagged on it.) It's just that the rope is going to bounce and sway unless it's under tremendous tension, so a stick is still a better opti...
