Interesting post, and I agree. I visit NOLA frequently, and was there just last fall, Halloween week. For the first time I noticed the vagabonds at the riverfront, while awaiting a trolley near the French Market. They really reminded me of characters in this book and movie, and of the 1960's hippies...
